This book is the result of an idea. That idea is that there is a positive relationship between the Maccabees and the Zealots. Josephus comes into the picture because he asserts the contrary, i.e., the Zealots began de novo, having no connection with the Maccabees.

"The Dead Sea Scrolls have brought new life into the field of Biblical scholarship. Tempers are flaring. Allegations are made. Refutations thunder. And the darkness that has covered the inter-testamentary period especially is pierced by sudden illuminations and flashes of insight. Once stirred, this excitement can spread into areas of scholarship which have for long been regarded as routine and well established. Even the works of a solid and staid historian like Josephus can provide the thrills of mystery and detection, and a period of Jewish history that is somewhat poorly documented may still give scope for the exercise of Sherlock-Holmesian talents.

... In short, Maccabees, Zealots and Josephus is a fascinating, indeed, a thrilling book the kind you cannot put down. ... It opens up new vistas for the study of a period in history which is of supreme innportance to both Judaism and Christianity."
Jacob J. Petuchowski, Commentary
