The greatest sea battle of World War Two destroyed two of the finest warships ever built and claimed the lives of almost 3,500 men. Sixty years later, Channel 4 mounted an ambitious underwater expedition, led by David Mearns. Its aim to locate the wrecks and solve the mysteries surrounding HMS Hood and Bismarck. This final epic battle is recounted through the eyes of the survivors.

The mighty Hood was considered the greatest warship afloat. Over two world wars, HMS Hood was the biggest, fastest, most powerful and arguably the most beautiful ship afloat. Nothing could challenge her... until Bismarck.

The invincible Bismarck was a state-of-the art battleship and Germany's challenge to Britain's supremacy at sea. Launched in February 1939, she carried a daunting array of firepower, including no less than eight 15' guns.

The loss of Hood prompted Churchill's famous response: 'Sink the Bismarck'. For the next three days every available allied ship and plane hunted the German warship until, at 10:40 on 27 May 1941, the mighty Bismarck rolled over and sank. These two great warships became inextricably linked in history for evermore.

The Battle of Hood and Bismarck turned one of the most ambitious underwater expeditions ever undertaken, into one of the major or broadcasting events of the ear.
