PDF vs. DjVu

Both the DjVu and PDF formats define features that aim at creating a document delivery platform. The main difference between the DjVu and PDF is that DjVu is developed as raster image format, while PDF is developed as a vector image format. Some of the consequences of this difference are:
  1. Image resolution – when the DjVu file is created, the maximal raster image resolution must be specified, while the PDF vector image resolution can be magnified at arbitrary values without loss of data. This means that images have a lower quality when converted to DjVu than in PDF
  2. Character rendering – DjVu renders characters as images, without the use of fonts, while PDF renders characters using fonts. This means that DjVu documents don’t contain searchable text as PDF files do (for instance search engines cannot index the content of DjVu documents as they do for PDF files).
DjVu format advantages:
  1. Good compression – the file can include a great amount of elements (graphics, colors, fonts, patterns) and still have a small size (but with a cost, as there is a loss of quality in converted images)
  2. Suitable for Electronic books – the manner in which a DjVu document is viewed is more user-friendly for people accustomed to reading eBooks
  3. Fast image rendering – when viewing the DjVu document, pages with images will open very fast because graphics are rendered in advance (cached).
  4. Scanned documents conversion algorithm - For its main purpose DjVu has a unique algorithm for converting scanned image and text elements.
  5. DjVu is good as a storage format for documents with graphics, manuals and scanned documents (as long as quality loss is not an issue)
DjVu format disadvantages:
  1. Quality loss may occur when converting to DjVu from other formats.
  2. Restricted usage - DjVu is proprietary and it has a rather low user base
  3. Dependable - separate programs or plugins need to be installed for creating or reading the file
  4. Manageability – The DjVu document cannot be edited once created
PDF format advantages:
  1. Popularity – PDF is the most popular document format for sharing and storage, and a wide range of software solutions are available (free and commercial)
  2. Security – It has the best security settings for keeping the document safe from unauthorized access
  3. Standardization – PDF has an ISO standard as an archiving and document sharing format (PDF/A)
  4. Fidelity – the PDF conversion algorithm offers an optimum quality/size ratio, as it significantly compresses data (especially text) but without quality losses. This is why PDF is widespreaded in the printing industry too, as it can produce press-quality documents that render the content exactly when printed on paper too.
  5. Interactivity – PDF also offers support for sounds, interactive forms and JavaScript programs
PDF format disadvantages:
  1. Dependence - requires installing separate programs for reading or creating the document
  2. Manageability – by its nature PDF is not an editable format as it is simply described as an image of a document
  3. Compatibility – PDF files sent by other users may have difficulties displaying certain content
Taking into consideration the specific features of each format as well as its advantages, DjVu and PDF cannot be considered rival formats as they are designed for solving different tasks and therefore complementing each other.
